Our Technology Raises Our Level of Care

At Eyes on Stonehaven, we invest in innovative eye care technology that enhances our standard of care. This technology allows us to better monitor your child’s eyesight and eye growth.

It is important to our team that we stay on top of new technologies as they emerge in the eye care field. We want to give your child quality eye care, backed by research. By using these key diagnostic imaging and mapping technologies, we’re able to measure your child’s eyes, map the surface of the eyes, and track changes over time.

Maintaining a record of their eyes is important for their overall and long-term eye health. If your child hasn’t visited an eye doctor this year, it might be time to book an eye exam.

Why Are Eye Measurements Important?

Nearsighted children often experience eye elongation, where the distance between the front and back of their eyes grows too long.

Our technology can measure this distance and plot it on a chart, similar to their growth chart at their family doctor. Just as the family doctor compares their height and weight to their age, we’ll check their eye length.

Eye length often indicates myopia, sometimes even before your child needs glasses. As the eye grows longer, the risk for future complications, such as cataracts, glaucoma, or retinal detachment, increases. Measuring eye length helps us monitor their myopia and intervene as soon as we notice signs.

Our Technology for Healthy Eyes

During your child’s eye exam, we use devices to measure their axial length, or the distance between the front and back of the eye. By tracking this measurement, we can make sure their eyes are trending normally for their age.

We also use instruments such as corneal topographers, which map the shape of their cornea (the clear, front part of the eye). This is typically done when fitting their eyes for contact lenses or ortho-k lenses

All the technology we use during children’s eye exams is noninvasive. Your child will place their head on the chin and forehead rests and look into a camera. We’ll explain every test to your child to make them feel comfortable during their appointment.

We use the Nidek Optical Biometer to measure your child’s axial length. The device allows us to easily track this measurement over time and compare it to the standard growth curve. The scan is as quick as taking a picture, and nothing touches their eye.

We use the Medmont Corneal Topographer to measure and map the surface of your child’s eye. The device captures the mapping images in seconds and doesn’t touch your child’s eyes. By mapping the curvature of their cornea, we can precisely fit contact lenses or ortho-k lenses for myopia management.

We use the Topocon Maestro Combination Retinal photography + OCT device to accurately track their physical eye health. This device takes photos of your child’s retina (the inside of the eye) to check on their eye health and provide a baseline of data to support their eyes for the future.

OCT scans are similar to ultrasounds for your eyes; however, they use light waves instead of sound. These scans show a 3D scan of the layers of the retina, and help us to detect eye conditions through microscopic changes.

Monitoring Their Eyes Through Technology

Tracking their eye growth and vision changes over time is not only important to detect myopia, but also to monitor the efficacy of their treatment.

By monitoring their eye shape and vision through objective tests, we can make sure the myopia management methods we’re using are slowing the progression of their myopia as expected. If we notice the treatments are not as effective as we’d like, we can adjust their treatment plan to find the right fit.

Clearer Vision, Brighter Future

We help protect your child’s eyes today so their vision is clear and their eyes are healthy for the future.

Our Myopia Management Treatments

Ortho-K Contact Lenses

Ortho-k lenses are worn overnight, gently reshaping the curve of your cornea so you can see clearly throughout the day without lenses.

Soft Multifocal Contact Lenses

Soft multifocal contact lenses provide multiple prescriptions or powers that help to correct nearsightedness and slow myopia progression.

Myopia Management Spectacle Lenses

Specially-designed myopia management glasses provide peripheral defocus that reduce eye elongation and the worsening of myopia.

Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops

Low-dose atropine eye drops are administered at night, helping to slow myopia progression. They are often paired with another treatment method.
